The UK has gone through a renewable energy revolution in recent years, reducing our reliance on large power stations fired on fossil fuels. However, power from renewables projects like wind and solar plant is not always available and so it is necessary to have a source of electricity for times when electricity demand exceeds supply.
One of the most effective ways to provide this is with small gas or diesel fired generators. Developments are usually sized up to 20MW and take up only a small amount of space (0.04 acres per MW).
A typical development would include a number of engines in acoustic containers, a fuel tank and delivery area for fuel tankers all surrounded by a security fence. They are operated remotely with occasional visits by engineers to ensure that they are in a good state of repair.
They can run on a range of fuels including diesel and biodiesel.
